Students should study World War 2 because it helps us understand how we, as a nation, grew into the world power we were today. Most students believe that once we became a nation that we just grew in world power until we got where we are now, which is not the case. in decades building up to World War 2 many people do not know that we as a nation were a very isolationist state. This is a key misconception and goes a great deal to show the power and strength we have gained over the last 50 years since WW2 compared to our country’s influence before WW2. When we compare the nation’s viewpoint of world politics after World War 1 compared to World War 2 we see a huge change in mentality. This new openness to world activities and world policing (if you will) is the reason we have gone to so many wars since WW2. This reasoning is why we are in Iraq and possibly going to Syria too. This idea of the United States at the Head of the United Nations and other coalitions is only understandable if you know the history of our rise to world power. I hear people all the time say “let’s just stay out of it.” Sadly, we as a nation cannot do that, and we have not done that since World War 2. Most people do not understand, and now I see why, because they are missing some historical knowledge others of us have. If more people had this knowledge I believe we as a nation would have a better idea of self identity as well as self perspective of our role in the world setting. We as a country might not be around for every, and our policies might change from time to time, but this is due to history, so we should know it better to understand our present more.
The study of World War 2 would also help us understand the time period of one of the greatest Wars of all time. We will then know how the whole country had to pull together to strive for victory, this united front has never since been seen. We will then know where some of the basic technology from today originated from. And we will understand the true meaning of sacrifice since hundreds of thousands died for freedom for us. Some of the horrible things that happened in World War 2, are still some of the most horrendous things ever to occur on this earth.
How can we possibly understand and know this if we do not study World War 2.
